Masterclass Plates

In this masterclass, you’ll learn everything about plates.

It’s no secret that plates (or any flatware) are one of the most difficult shapes to make on the potter’s wheel. Flattening out a large amount of clay requires different throwing techniques and impeccable body awareness.

In this masterclass, you’ll learn everything about plates. We’ll cover what makes a good plate, the design of plates, what restaurants look for in plates, and what the biggest pitfalls and challenges are in making plates (and how to overcome them). You’ll get to learn about the infamous S-crack, compression, the importance of slow-drying, and using the centrifugal force of the wheel to your advantage.

I will demonstrate the throwing of a contemporary-style plate and let you in on some advanced techniques and secret tips. After that, it's your turn to take a seat behind the wheel. I will offer you hands-on guidance and detailed instructions while you make your own plate.

Who This Is For

This workshop has a skills prerequisite
. It’s not suited for beginners. Intermediate throwing experience is required. Attendees are expected to feel comfortable centering and throwing 4 lbs of clay and throwing consistent cylinders without assistance.

Important Information

Please note that this workshop focuses on throwing only. If you throw a stellar plate that you just don't want to say goodbye to, either bring your own bat and take your piece back with you to trim and fire in your own home or communal studio. Or, I can trim, glaze, and fire it for you for an additional fee of CAD 25.00.

What to Expect?

Although we work with clay and tools, I strongly believe that the most important medium we work with is our own body. A lot of my tips and guidance will focus on body awareness. Believe it or not, even the toes of your left foot play a role in determining the result of a pot! Hips, core, shoulders, triceps; understanding and focusing on how your body works together with the laws of physics of a spinning wheel, will make your life so much easier!

These workshops focus mainly on technique, shape, and contemporary design in ceramics. For more in-depth decorating and glazing courses, and for more traditional shapes, colours, or sculptural work, I can point you in the direction of some skilled artists and community studios in Vancouver, BC.

What to Bring?

Clay and tools are available for use in the studio and are free of charge. You are free to bring your own favourite tools.

If you want to take your thrown piece with you, please bring your own bat.

Bring a towel and wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, or an apron. And a little reminder: short fingernails, long hair that’s tied up, and removing your jewelry make throwing so much easier!

Share the Fun!

Have a friend who’d also like to do the workshop? I can facilitate two people. Just note there’s only one wheel in the studio, so time at the wheel will be shared — and watching each other can be just as valuable as throwing yourself.

Location

The workshop takes place in my East Vancouver studio. There is ample parking in the alley near the back entrance. I will provide you with more details after your workshop is confirmed.

Cancellation Policy

It is always possible to adjust your workshop date, as long as you give 48-hour notice. If you cancel after the 48-hour window, your full workshop fee will be charged. Workshops can only be rescheduled once.
